Explore art and ecology at The Presidio in San Francisco!
Julius Kahn Playground & Andy Goldsworthy Spire @ The Presidio, San Francisco
Julius Kahn Playground is a beloved part of the SF Presidio community. It’s where toddlers get their kicks on slides, swings, and sand while school-aged kids work their motor skills on the climbing and spinning structures. Often, as their tots are busy playing, adults take the opportunity to soak in the spectacular view, which on a clear day stretches north to the Golden Gate Bridge and beyond to the Marin Headlands.
With a new adventure just steps away on a park trail, Julius Kahn Playground is an ideal gateway to the Presidio. Nearby the playground, you can follow the Ecology Trail for a quick 15-minute walk to view beautiful public artworks in nature. Discover Andy Goldsworthy’s work titled Spire, a stunning landmark of startling grandeur (and kid favorite). Standing at 100 feet tall at its tapering peak, Spire is a sculpture by the world-renowned artist. Spire is a powerful symbol of the rejuvenation of the beloved Presidio forest, first planted by the Army in the 1880s. The aging Monterey cypress trees are now reaching the end of their life and are being slowly replaced with healthy young saplings.
Location: Pacific Avenue & Spruce Street | San Francisco, 94118
Event: Free play & hiking
Day: Open daily
Price: Free

Museum Day + Drop-in Activities @ Bay Area Discovery Museum, Sausalito
There’s so much to explore at the Bay Area Discovery Museum! From navigating wind tunnels to develop physical and mental risk-taking skills to feeling the rush of cold water tide pools that surprise and awaken curiosity to tapping their imaginations to transform into a spider, a ship captain, or a bridge builder, children expand their creativity at every turn.

The Toddler Circle Time program helps children practice language and movement skills through singing, dancing, jumping, and play.

Ages 5-10 years
Design Lab provides children with the opportunity to intentionally build STEM skills through hands-on learning in the Fab Lab. In this high-tech maker-space, children have the opportunity to create, ideate, design, and fabricate ideas using tablets, vinyl cutters, laser cutters, and 3-D printers.
11-11:30 AM – Storytime: Roaming in the Rainforest

In Creature Count, children act like field scientists and explore plants, animals, and various aspects of nature found in Lookout Cove. Using binoculars and magnifying glasses, kids observe, hypothesize, predict data, and perform experiments.
3-4 PM – Art Lab: Tissue Paper Prints
Ages 5-10
Art Lab programs are an opportunity for children to explore various artistic techniques and media, and to learn about art movements, styles, and artists from around the world.
